The journey of pregnancy and giving birth in particular, is one of the most life changing and intimate experiences and chapters of your life. Your birth experience will largely depend on the extent of your involvement and the care and support you experience, will assist you in your own empowerment and thus facilitate your optimum birth.

The support you experience can be from professionals such as Dr. Petrina herself or a midwife, as well as your chosen relatives and friends. Together they will provide,

  • emotional support in the form of encouragement, praise, reassurance and privacy.
  • Informational supportive with information provision, discussion and explanation as well as deliberation and opinion.
  • Physical support in the form of comfort measures, positioning and general assistance.
  • Advocacy of your preferences and choices, including someone acting on your behalf.

The research reinforces the importance of well considered support. Studies show that where women have a choice for their birth partner, it has a positive influence on their satisfaction with the birth event.

When thinking about who you want to provide support in labour, cultural and religious values may also play a large part. In some cultures it is thought shameful or indecent for a man to be present, and women look for support from other women in the family or in their chosen health professional. This is why you need to carefully consider your choice of birth companions in the light of who will best be able to support your needs before labour.
During your labour, support will also be offered through access to and availability of a range of equipment and props such as cushions, birthing balls and ropes as well as the provision of metamorphic birthing beds that can be manipulated to encourage upright supported positions.
If you need additional information about sources of birth support, talk to your midwife and doctor.
